Your journey begins with an early morning drive from Arusha or Moshi to Tarangire National Park. This park is known for its massive elephant herds and striking baobab trees. Its varied landscape includes open savannah, seasonal swamps, and river valleys. You’ll enjoy a full-day game drive, with the chance to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions, wildebeests, and many bird species. After a picnic lunch in the park, you’ll head to the town of Karatu, located near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You’ll spend the night in a comfortable lodge surrounded by green highlands.
On day two, you’ll visit the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The crater is home to an incredible range of wildlife, including the Big Five – lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and rhino. Your exciting safari adventure begins early in the morning with a comfortable pickup from your hotel or lodge in Arusha. As you drive out of the town, you’ll enjoy the scenic route leading to Tarangire National Park, a journey of approximately two and a half hours through rural landscapes dotted with traditional Maasai villages and rolling hills. Upon arrival at the park entrance, you will meet your professional, English-speaking safari guide who will accompany you throughout your safari.
Tarangire National Park is renowned for its impressive elephant population—the largest concentration in northern Tanzania—and its iconic ancient baobab trees that punctuate the landscape. You’ll embark on a thrilling game drive, exploring diverse habitats ranging from dry riverbeds to lush seasonal swamps. Keep your camera ready to capture sightings of majestic lions resting under acacia trees, graceful giraffes browsing on treetops, herds of zebra and wildebeests crossing open plains, and playful troops of baboons.
Around midday, your guide will stop at a scenic picnic site where you can enjoy a delicious packed lunch while surrounded by the sounds and sights of the African wilderness. This relaxing break provides a perfect opportunity to unwind and appreciate the natural beauty of the park.
In the afternoon, you’ll continue your game drive, increasing your chances of spotting elusive leopards, shy bushbucks, or rare bird species like the yellow-collared lovebird and the kori bustard. As the day winds down, you will exit the park and take a short drive to the charming town of Karatu, situated at the edge of the Ngorongoro Highlands. Here, you’ll check into your comfortable mid-range lodge, where you can freshen up before enjoying a delicious dinner and a restful night, preparing for the next day’s journey into the Ngorongoro Crater.

After an early breakfast at Marera Valley Lodge, you will set off for the spectacular Ngorongoro Conservation Area, just a short drive from the lodge. You’ll descend approximately 600 meters into the vast Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the richest wildlife habitats in Africa. Here, you will enjoy a half-day game drive, spotting a wide variety of animals including the famed Big Five — lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and black rhinoceros.
The crater’s diverse ecosystems support an abundance of wildlife, from hippos lounging in the crater’s soda lakes to flamingos gracing the shores, as well as cheetahs, hyenas, and countless bird species. Your guide will take you to the best spots for wildlife viewing while sharing insights about the crater’s unique geology and ecology.
Midday, you’ll stop for a picnic lunch amidst the breathtaking crater scenery. After your meal and a little more game viewing, you will ascend from the crater rim and begin the scenic drive back to Arusha or Moshi. You should arrive by late afternoon or early evening, where your unforgettable 2-day safari concludes.
You will likely see elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, buffaloes, hippos, flamingos, and many bird species. There’s also a chance to spot the elusive leopard and black rhinoceros in Ngorongoro Crater.
The dry season, from June to October, is ideal for wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources. January to March can also be good, but some roads might be muddy.
