Meru and Kilimanjaro, this charming town is known as the safari capital of Tanzania. Day 2-4

Katavi A Land of a 1000 Buffaloes

After an early breakfast, you will be transferred by car to Arusha Airport where you will board your scheduled light aircraft flight to Ikuu airstrip in the Katavi National Park. This remote park, isolated in the far west of Tanzania is a destination few people have been lucky enough to visit. Due to this, it feels magically untouched and Chada Katavi sits in the midst of this exceptionally raw, wild terrain. Strap on your walking boots for a fascinating short guided nature walk with your knowledgeable guide. Revel in an early morning game drive through this remote park with a scrumptious picnic lunch. The park is an abundance of wildlife, and massive herds of elephant and buffalo congregate on the floodplains. In the dry season massive hippo populations abound here, and reveal a spectacular sight as over 200 large grey bodies flop together in liquid pools, and baby hippos thoroughly enjoy bobbing on their mom’s back, and playing hide and seek under the water. During the wet season take a drive along the the river and seasonal lakes which provide plenty of sustenance for the many animals in the park. The lakes Chada and Katavi are particularly popular with crocodile and hippo, with the area supporting the densest concentrations of these animals in all of Tanzania. Overnight: Chada Katavi

Day 5

Flight to Ruaha

Today you will fly south to the extraordinary, contrasting beauty of Ruaha National Park. On arrival at Msembe airstrip you will be met by a guide before having your first experience of this great park by driving to Jabali Ridge. Once at camp you will have the opportunity to settle into your suite and drink in your new view overlooking a baobab valley. After lunch your afternoon is your own and you can decide to relax by the pool and arrange a massage or perhaps head out on an afternoon game drive. Overnight: Jabali Ridge

Day 6-7

Explore Ruaha

Over the next few days, you have varying choices on how to spend your day, which the managers and guides will talk you through each evening. Walking safaris are a great way to start the day, getting out early and exploring the environment on equal footing as the wildlife. There are morning game drives with picnic breakfasts, or delicious breakfasts to be enjoyed in camp. Full-day game drives with picnic lunches, or a relaxed lunch in camp with an afternoon game drive. Or spend the day in camp, enjoying the pleasures of the spa and unwinding in the swimming pool before venturing out on a night game drive.

Day 8

Ruaha-Nyerere

Today is an early drive to the airstrip to catch the flight over to Nyerere in time for lunch.  Settle in then take a short sundowner boat trip up river before a candlelit dinner in the main dining room, or around the pool. Overnight: Sand Rivers Selous

  • 6 Hours
  • Breakfast , Lunch , Dinner
Day 9-10

Exploring Nyerere

Days at Sand Rivers are about exploring. Our open-sided 4x4 vehicles are a great way of seeing things. For covering a bit of distance when that's what's needed. But, we like to retain spontaneity wherever we can. Often the best way to see things, to avoid scattering animals from the lakeshore, or spooking a herd of elephant as they feed, is to hop down and quietly work our way into a good position on foot. And the same goes for our boats. Being on the river is a fantastic contrast to time spent in a vehicle. All in all, days at Sand Rivers aren't about box ticking, or endless driving in search of the next animal. It's a sense of gradual absorption in this corner of the natural world that we'd love you to feel.

  • 6 Hours
  • Breakfast , Lunch , Dinner
Day 11

Fly to Dar es Salaam

Enjoy your final breakfast before waving goodbye to Sand Rivers Selous and heading back to Kiba airstrip for your flight to Dar es Salaam.

  • 4 Hours
