Distance: 139 km Non-Game Viewing Time: 2 to 3 hours After breakfast at your lodge in Arusha, depart for Tarangire National Park. The drive takes you through the beautiful Maasai steppe, passing various villages along the way. Tarangire, one of the best national parks in Northern Tanzania, is situated along the Tarangire River and features low-lying hills that are part of the Great Rift Valley. The park is primarily covered in acacia woodlands and is dotted with impressive African baobab trees, alongside a swamp area in the south. The Tarangire River and surrounding swamps attract a large number of wildlife, as they are the only permanent water sources in the park. Tarangire is especially famous for its substantial elephant population, which is unparalleled in Africa. During your game drive, you can expect to see giraffes, buffalo, zebras, impalas, wildebeests, warthogs, baboons, and numerous monkeys. Rare species such as the Greater Kudu, Fringed-Eared Oryx, and Ash Stalling may also make an appearance. Additionally, predators like lions, leopards, hyenas, jackals, and cheetahs, along with various vultures and other birds of prey, inhabit the park. Birdwatchers will delight in the fact that over 400 bird species have been recorded here, including many migratory species. In the late afternoon, enjoy a sunset drive as you head to Marera Valley Lodge for dinner and an overnight stay. Be sure to stop at the Lake Manyara viewpoint for stunning pictures of the lake and its lush forest, framed by the Great East African Rift Valley.
