Having flown in from Nairobi, Arusha or Kilimanjaro, we meet you on day one at Kogatende Airstrip (in the north western Serengeti). The airstrip lies by the Mara river, so your first game drive begins the moment you step from the plane! After your short drive from the airstrip to the camp, a leisurely lunch is followed by time acclimatizing, gazing around yourself and realising you’ve just arrived in the heart of the African Bush! Then a late afternoon drive gives you the chance to explore the local wildlife and enjoy a drink against the setting sun, before heading for the wonders of a Serengeti Bushtops dinner. Overnight at Serengeti Bushtops
One of the many advantages of being located in the heart of the Serengeti is being able to run nature walks within the Camp grounds. An armed Tanapa ranger will accompany you and your ranger also local Kuria tribesman comes along to spot and interpret the animals tracks left from the night before and identify the flora and fauna, explaining for example which are used for medicinal purposes by his tribe. All you need is a pair of good walking shoes and a sense of adventure. Then a late afternoon go for afternoon game drive return to the camp for Dinner
The Bushcraft Challenge introduces guests to basic survival skills, local culture, the importance of conservation and (of course) local flora and fauna. Completing the challenge leads to a Bushtops certificate, authenticating unique newfound skills and a sense of real achievement.
Activities include learning to make fire without matches or a lighter; completing animal spotting checklists (helped by our rangers); identifying animal tracks and making a memento plaster cast of their favourites; learning about animal bones; practicing archery; trying out bead-making skills; and baking Swahili treats. Although we designed the Challenge for younger members of the family, we’ve found it appeals equally to curious minds of all ages! It really is great fun and we have had fantastic feedback from children and parents alike.
They say that every good thing has to end – and that parting is such sweet sorrow. However, one last natural wonder is left: the drive to the airstrip for your flight back to Arusha/JRO/Nairobi. This is your last opportunity to find something special in the landscape, so your ranger and spotter will be as keen as you are to pick out a final attraction to be captured as a parting memory, or on film forever.
