Moshi – Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut

Your Kilimanjaro adventure officially begins today! Here, you’ll complete registration with Kilimanjaro National Park authorities, and porters will organize your gear for the trek ahead.

The hike begins through the lush rainforest, where you’ll walk beneath a thick canopy of trees surrounded by the sounds of tropical birds and the rustling of Colobus monkeys. The trail is well-maintained and slightly inclined, offering a gentle introduction to the mountain.

You’ll enjoy a picnic lunch along the way, and after approximately 4–5 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700 meters), your first overnight stop. The huts are dormitory-style and offer simple beds and shared facilities, providing a comfortable experience compared to camping routes.

After settling in, you may take a short walk to the nearby Maundi Crater for panoramic views of northern Tanzania and parts of Kenya on a clear day.

Day 3: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut

Day 3: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut

After a restful night at Mandara Hut, today’s trek takes you higher as you ascend through the beautiful heath and moorland zone. The landscape gradually opens up, revealing unique flora such as giant lobelias and senecios, creating an otherworldly atmosphere.

The hike is moderately challenging and takes about 5–6 hours, covering roughly 12 kilometers (7.5 miles). Along the way, enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and the plains below. You’ll pass small streams and rocky outcrops, and with luck, spot some of Kilimanjaro’s rare bird species.

You’ll reach Horombo Hut (3,720 meters) by late afternoon, your home for the next two nights. This hut is larger and offers slightly better facilities, including a dining hut where you can relax and share stories with fellow climbers.

Take the afternoon to acclimatize at Horombo by resting or taking a short hike to the nearby Mandara Plateau or Horseshoe Crater for spectacular views and to help your body adjust to the altitude.

Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, you’ll begin your trek from the moorland zone into the alpine desert as you make your way toward Kibo Hut. The terrain becomes more rugged and barren, with spectacular views of the crater rim and glaciers above.

This is a longer and more challenging day, typically taking about 5–6 hours to cover approximately 11 kilometers (7 miles) with a gradual ascent to Kibo Hut (4,700 meters). The air is thinner, so pacing yourself is important.

At Kibo Hut, you’ll rest and prepare for the final summit push that happens very early the next morning. Take time to hydrate well, have a nutritious meal, and get some rest in this basic but strategically located mountain hut.

Evening temperatures drop significantly, so be ready for the cold night ahead.

Kibo Hut – Summit – Horombo Hut

This is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro adventure. You’ll start your summit push very early—usually around midnight—to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) by sunrise.

The climb from Kibo Hut to the summit covers about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) but is steep, rocky, and physically demanding. You’ll ascend through the cold and thin air, passing the famous Gilman’s Point on the crater rim before continuing to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

At the summit, celebrate your incredible achievement with breathtaking panoramic views over the surrounding plains and mountains—a truly unforgettable moment.

After soaking in the views, you’ll descend back down to Kibo Hut for a brief rest and some food, then continue descending further to Horombo Hut (3,720 meters) where you’ll spend the night.

The descent is long but less strenuous, and you’ll enjoy seeing the mountain from a different perspective as you go down.

After a well-deserved rest and breakfast at Horombo Hut, you’ll begin your final descent back down to Marangu Gate. The trek down is much easier and faster, taking approximately 4–5 hours as you pass again through the heath, moorland, and lush rainforest zones.

Upon arrival at Marangu Gate, you’ll complete the formalities with park officials and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate, a proud memento of your incredible achievement.
